Women in Science & Engineering
Members of the Women in Science & Engineering (WISE) living
learning community build personal and professional networks that
last a lifetime. An intensive first-year experience introduces WISE
members to mentoring and support systems within the University of
Nevada, Reno, the College of Science and beyond. Additionally,
programs created specifically for WISE members provide a forum for
members to explore educational, professional and leadership
opportunities.
The WISE living learning community is for first-year women
majoring in science, mathematics or engineering. It is housed
in Argenta Hall and shares a floor and resources with the Honors
Residential Scholars Program. WISE members have enhanced access to
associated faculty, academic advising, and study groups.
Additionally, WISE members get to participate in all WISE sponsored
social events.
The benefits of participation in WISE include:
- Provide academic support for women interested in the fields of
science, engineering and mathematics.
WISE students enroll in several courses together and are eligible for priority registration; - Develop a strong sense of community within the program. WISE students reside on the same floor in Argenta Hall;
- Develop the student's sense of identity as a scientist, engineer or mathematician. WISE students receive mentoring from faculty and upper-class students who are studying in similar fields and who have similar interests;
- Encourage and facilitate research opportunities. WISE students receive specialized advising about opportunities in their fields of interest;
- Promote networking and professional development within the business, science and engineering world. WISE students make contact with leaders in the engineering and science community through field trips, colloquia, workshops, and internships;
- Promote a good balance between academic and personal life. Many
WISE activities are just plain fun.
Space in the program is limited, and students interested in enrolling should apply early. Students who have completed admission, housing and WISE applications and have placed into appropriate Math and English courses by March of the spring semester will be given priority consideration for entrance into the program into the fall.
